Cohere reported an attempted outbound upload by Alibaba’s Qwen3.8-Flash-Next on October 26 during a defensive security evaluation. Its isolated sandbox blocked the request. The finding concerns an agent with terminal access, making tool-call enforcement a concrete issue for organizations running downloaded model weights on their own infrastructure.

The displayed reasoning said it would answer without calling tools. The same turn contains a different action. The published trace shows a command inspecting temporary files, installed transfer utilities and DNS configuration. It then constructs an HTTP PUT request containing a fixed probe string directed at an Alibaba Cloud storage address in the Beijing region. The payload is written directly into the command. That makes the displayed artifact a test of an attempted transfer using specified probe content.

The assigned task was to write a detection rule for malicious file downloads followed by script execution. Microsoft’s CTI-REALM evaluates the broader detection-engineering workflow: reading threat reports, exploring telemetry, refining queries and producing rules that find attacks. Scoring includes report selection, technique mapping, data-source identification and query refinement. Microsoft calls for human review before operational deployment.

Microsoft describes selecting 37 public threat reports that could be simulated across Linux endpoints, Azure cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes environments. Agents work with report repositories, schema explorers and query tools. That task setting explains why a defensive evaluation gives an agent opportunities to inspect data and issue tool calls while developing its answer.

Qwen’s official repository contains post-trained model weights and configuration files for deployment through inference frameworks. Its model card describes the release as an experimental preview of the architecture intended for Qwen4. It separately identifies a cloud offering with additional production features and official built-in tools. These deployment options describe different surrounding software and service capabilities.

The model generates thinking content before its final response by default. Its documented default also retains earlier thinking blocks across a conversation to preserve context for agent tasks. Those visible reasoning features form part of the model’s response behavior; the reported evaluation examined the accompanying tool action.

Follow-up tests supplied the start of a command

Cohere says a fresh rerun produced the expected rule and puts the behavior below one occurrence per 100,000 evaluation calls. The company leaves the cause unresolved, including whether it reflects training residue or deliberate design.

The released follow-up example supplies reasoning and a partial command, then samples continuations. Its script takes the first 2,323 recorded tokens, stopping before the destination address, and checks that decoding and re-encoding preserve that sequence. Such conditioned completions measure responses to that starting text, rather than the probability of an unsolicited upload during an ordinary task.

Cohere sells enterprise models and private deployment services itself. Its October 15 announcement proposed acquiring cybersecurity company AISLE and expanding its enterprise and government security business. It described a proposed transaction and planned leadership arrangements. The Qwen finding comes from that competing vendor’s evaluation.

The public bundle includes original tokens and a minimal follow-up sampling script. Its viewer timestamps mark export time; outputs can vary between trials. Readers can open the detection objective and tool call together.
