Blank Copilot settings get a default as rollout runs through October 26
3-line summary
- GitHub is rolling out Copilot’s feature default policy from October 22 through 26.
- It fills eligible unconfigured GA settings while preserving explicit enabled or disabled choices.
- Business and Enterprise administrators should review their default and individual feature settings.
Unconfigured Copilot features are receiving values from the selected default policy. GitHub began enforcement for Copilot Business and Enterprise on October 22, with a phased rollout through October 26. This implements a policy announced in September, so timing can differ between enterprises and organizations.
The selected policy enables, disables or delegates eligible settings to organizations where supported. Explicit feature choices remain intact. Filling existing unconfigured settings is a one-time transition: changing the default later does not rewrite feature policies that already have values.
The scope includes GA features and client settings, code review and MCP servers in Copilot. Preview features are excluded. Data-residency and FedRAMP model restrictions on GHE.com, and cloud storage of local CLI and VS Code sessions, are also exceptions. Model default availability is a separate policy.
Enterprise owners can inspect the default under AI controls → Copilot and individual settings in the relevant pages, including Features & clients. Organization owners cannot override an enterprise-wide enabled or disabled policy. The announcement alone does not establish any particular company’s current configuration or universal model access.
Why it matters
AI Ping sees the key change as unconfigured settings becoming operational choices. Administrators should compare the chosen default with the feature policies that actually take effect.
Who it's for
- Developers
- If a capability appears or disappears, ask its owner to check both the feature setting and the default.
- Office workers
- If you coordinate Copilot administration, record the default, exceptions, delegation scope and observed results.
