From 1,000 to 30,000-plus: Uber takes ChatGPT Work company-wide

3-line summary

  1. Uber is expanding ChatGPT Work from a 1,000-person pilot to more than 30,000 employees worldwide.
  2. The product combines information from workplace tools for operating reviews and follow-up work.
  3. Access to connected apps depends on authorization; enabling a tool does not unlock every account.

OpenAI said on October 22 that Uber had begun rolling out ChatGPT Work, its workplace agent within ChatGPT Enterprise, across the company. The rollout targets more than 30,000 employees globally, following a pilot involving 1,000 people.

What work can it handle? OpenAI's operations guide describes gathering project information from services such as Slack and Google Drive, preparing operating reviews and carrying follow-up work forward. It also describes packaging repeatable procedures as shared Skills. These are general product uses, not measured results from Uber.

Access has limits. Official enterprise documentation says making an app available does not automatically authorize an account connection or grant access to its data. Administrators can control app availability and role access, with read-only restrictions supported by some apps.

The announcement includes no measured productivity results from the company-wide expansion; the companies say they plan to share outcomes as adoption progresses. AI Ping's view is that task completion and time spent reviewing outputs will be more useful follow-up measures than access alone.

Why it matters

Expanding workplace AI involves reusable procedures and access decisions alongside account provisioning. AI Ping's assessment is that teams need to define what can be delegated and how the finished work will be reviewed.

Who it's for

Choose one recurring report and record its required inputs, completion criteria and review time before evaluating an agent.
Marketers
Before connecting campaign materials, decide which data can be shared and who approves the resulting work.
